Spring Reset: A TCM Guide to Move, Release & Realign

The spring season brings lots of movement, growth, and expansion, but also carries irritability, anxiety, and sometimes overwhelm. I put together a TCM spring guide for you to come back to between now and June to help you navigate the energy of Spring from what to eat, how to dress, what to expect, and how to flow with the season instead of against it.

The Energy of Spring (Wood Element)

Spring in TCM is governed by the Wood element, associated with:

  • Organs: Liver (LV) + Gallbladder (GB)

  • Emotion: Anger / frustration → transformation into vision + direction

  • Spirit: Hun (ethereal soul — purpose, dreams, expansion)

  • Climate: Wind

  • Direction: Upward + outward movement

This is the season of:

  • Growth

  • Movement

  • Vision

  • Rebirth

After winter’s stillness, your energy begins to rise, expand, and push outward.

Think: seeds breaking through soil

What’s Happening in the Body

In spring, Liver Qi is meant to flow freely.

When it does:

  • You feel motivated, creative, clear

  • Digestion improves

  • Emotions move without getting stuck

When it stagnates:

  • Irritability / mood swings

  • PMS / hormonal imbalance

  • Neck + shoulder tension

  • Digestive bloating

  • Eye strain / headaches

Most Common Spring Imbalances

1. Liver Qi Stagnation

  • Stress, frustration, feeling “stuck”

  • Tight traps, jaw, chest

  • Irregular digestion

2. Liver Yang Rising

  • Headaches, migraines

  • Red eyes, dizziness

  • Irritability, impatience

3. Wind Invasion (External Pathogen)

  • Seasonal allergies

  • Sneezing, itchy eyes

  • Sudden onset of symptoms

4. Liver Blood Deficiency

  • Dry eyes, blurry vision

  • Fatigue

  • Irregular or light periods

What to Expect (Energetically + Emotionally)

Spring can feel like:

  • A sudden urge to change everything

  • Emotional waves rising to the surface

  • Clarity around what is not aligned

  • Desire for movement, travel, expansion

You may also feel:

  • Restless

  • Easily irritated

  • More sensitive to others’ energy

This is not an imbalance, this is energy moving after being stored all winter

How to Prepare for Spring

Spring asks you to declutter + create space

Physical

  • Open windows → invite fresh air

  • Clean + reorganize your space

  • Lighter meals

Emotional

  • Journal what you’re ready to release

  • Identify where you feel stuck

Energetic

  • Move your body daily

  • Stretch (especially sides of the body = LV/GB channels)

What to Eat (Spring Diet in TCM)

Spring foods should support Liver Qi flow + gently cleanse

Favor:

  • Leafy greens (spinach, dandelion, arugula)

  • Sprouts

  • Citrus (lemon, lime)

  • Lightly cooked vegetables

  • Fresh herbs (cilantro, mint)

Flavors:

  • Slightly sour → supports Liver

  • Light + fresh

Protein:

  • Keep it moderate + clean

  • Fish, chicken, legumes

Reduce:

  • Heavy, greasy foods

  • Excess dairy

  • Alcohol (creates Liver heat + stagnation)

Lifestyle: How to Dress + Live

Spring = Wind season

Wind in TCM = sudden, moving, and penetrating

How to Dress:

  • Keep your neck + upper back covered

(Wind enters through GB20 area — back of neck)

  • Layers → weather shifts quickly

  • Light, breathable fabrics

Daily Living:

  • Wake up earlier (align with rising yang)

  • Spend more time outside

  • Start new projects (this is your go time)

Movement + Regulation

Spring is not the time for stillness — it’s the time for flow

Best practices:

  • Yoga (twists + side stretches for Liver channel)

  • Dance (your favorite)

  • Walking outdoors

Emotional Regulation:

  • Breathwork

  • EFT tapping along Liver + Gallbladder meridians

  • Journaling

How to Stay Balanced

Spring health = smooth flow of Liver Qi

Support this by:

  • Moving daily

  • Expressing emotions (don’t suppress)

  • Eating light + fresh foods

  • Creating space in your life

Simple Daily Spring Ritual

Morning (5–10 min):

  • Warm water with lemon

  • Gentle stretching (sides of body)

  • Set intention for the day

Midday:

  • Step outside → sunlight + movement

Evening:

  • Light dinner

  • Journaling: What am I holding onto?

Spring is not asking you to have it all figured out

It’s asking you to:

  • Move

  • Release

  • Trust the direction that’s unfolding

Just like nature, you don’t force growth — you create the conditions for it.

Brenda Lee
